Home to the Governor of Queensland, Government House is periodically open to the public. In the past this has been for picnic days, Christmas lights viewing, and tours of the historical mansion. In April 2022, Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeanette Young PSM opened the gates to Fernberg’s 10 hectare backyard. The first, of hopefully many, Government House bushwalks took place. Check the Government House website for future bushwalk dates.

Map:
The Government House bushwalk began at the Baroona Rd entrance. There were many scenic aspects along the track.
While the walk is short at 1.1km, there is a considerably steep section leading up to the main house. With care, pram and wheelchair access would be possible.
About half the walk was along dirt and gravel tracks, a very small part was on well maintained grass, and the remainder was bitumen path.
Signs to ‘The Ponds’ teased the bushwalkers, however, on this day the route set didn’t go past the tempting water feature. This small disappointment just encouraged me to book a free tour of the house and gardens.
Fernberg is a visual oasis but unfortunately, not always an auditory one. For much of the walk the predominant sounds were busy traffic. Moments of auditory bliss did occur when surrounded by the formal gardens.
This was a very worthwhile experience. Her Excellency was most hospitable, making herself available to the public and joining in on the walk. A wonderful initiative of Health and Wellbeing Queensland.
